Being Naked

Being naked is something most people associate with something private that often only takes place within the home. From the legs of children we are free. But as the body develops, we become self-conscious about ourselves and society's expectations of clothing affect us. On the beach we hide behind towels and swimwear, and only our lover is allowed to see our full nudity. But around Denmark, events are held where nudity creates community and equality. The naturists, regardless of the season, create space for a feeling of freedom, where appearance plays no role.

During the meeting with the naturists, I discovered how nudity created a free space for building social relationships. The interesting thing is not what position you have or where in the country you live. Nudity removes our filter and bias about other people. At the same time, they fight for the breakdown of body horror to instead appeal to the naturalness of being naked. Torben told me at one point, "the most natural thing when you bathe is to be naked. And if it's hot enough outside, the clothes lose their real function."

For almost two years I participated on an equal footing with the other naturists to create respect for the people I photographed. I became part of the community to understand naturism as best I could.
